As explained in my previous post, I got a blog hosting from @liewcf bidding over Twestival 3 months ago but never got to it because I am a “blog dumb”.
If they don’t have step by step guide, I’m lost. I need “NEXT”
Yeah, you’d probably think there are tonnes of guides on the internet or just google it. It is not that easy when I have no freaking idea about blogging.
So, I call for SOS on twitter and coincidentally @blogjunkie is running a 2 day blogging workshop over the weekend. And he offered help.
And help indeed he delivered.
Details of the workshop can be found in Buzzmedia.
I enjoyed the workshop and I am now able to set up and customize my WordPress blog.
Day 1:
Hands on setting up a Word Press with hosting. Introduced me to Cpanel, SQL, and so on.
What did I get:
- A folder of printed notes (also in PDF).
- A CD is provided with all the notes in PDF form.
- A completion certificate by News Straits Times.
I personally like paperless archiving. I add in sticky notes and call out box in the PDF notes using Acrobat instead of jotting down notes with a pen.
Moreover, the notes consists heaps of links for further reference. It would be a hassle to refer to both notes when revising later.
He even throw in some premiums (awesome Headway WP theme and Third Tribe Seminars in MP3) from his own pocket. Thank you!
Day 2
More like lecture class on spreading the word and less activities compared to Day 1 because most of us do not have an actual blog for us to market out. Talks on Google Analytics, Webmaster Tool, SEO and other marketing ways.
Word of advise by @blogjunkie: Don’t get too obsess with the stats.
Good:
Instructions were given clearly and helpers were efficient to guide those who were lost between PHP and SQL.
I find it realistically achievable to set up and run a successful blog as David points out local hero bloggers such as LiewCF, Friedbeef, Kenny Sia and so on.
Bad:
Lecture…ZZzzz~
On Day 2, the main topics involve having a blog to tell the whole world, “Hey, my blog exist!”
Most of us were not equip with a proper running blog. So, it was plain lecturing and it gets a little boring for me.
I suggest we could set up a free WordPress blog to make use those tools so that we get hands on and a clearer picture of it.
In a nutshell, this workshop is very useful for me as I have a Blogger blog and would like to move to WordPress hosting.
Thank you again to @blogjunkie for teaching me over the weekend all about blogging, I now have my own customisable blog!
